The Field of Rehabilitation Counselling

rehabilitation1As a vital player in the education of rehabilitation professionals working with people who have disabilities, The George Washington University’s Rehabilitation Program has been around for more than thirty years. Helping persons with disabilities to help themselves is the philosophy at GWU’s.  To maximise their potential for independence, rehabilitation counsellors can assist individuals with disabilities. As defined in the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the amendment in 1998, individuals with various physical, emotional and mental disabilities are counselled in independent living and educational pursuits. A Master’s degree in rehabilitation counselling is what the current trend is for those working in the counselling field. Those who receive the MA degree in Rehabilitation counselling can also take counselling licensees exams with just a few extra classes. Licensing requirements are different state to state, so check first in the state you would like to practice. The doctoral degree can be obtained by those counsellor educators, administrators and researchers who wish to go beyond the master’s degree.
